Is The Crocodile Hunter as important as a real clever person like Germaine Greer?
September 22nd 2006 03:41
With the death of Steve "Stingray" Irwin threatening to catapult his status from 'cringe-worthy celebrity' to somewhere between Gandhi and God, the formerly-relevant feminist author Germaine Greer has weighed in with a vituperative attempt to remain germane with all-too predictable results. Why a renowned writer of Greer's stature (she's really quite tall you know) would stoop once again to point out "Australian people are silly because they like boo-hooing over buffoons instead of buying my book" is beyond me but an ill-thought "thought piece" like this is akin to a testicle sandwich - best left alone. Predictably an opinion poll in the Murdoch-owned tabloid "Herald Sun" the same day fielded a massive response with 86.9% saying the self-styled rat-bag (now just plain old bag) should pull her bile-spewing head in (or words to that effect). What a surprise! Are you saying that after weeping copious crocodile (hunter) tears and laying a wreath-laden teddy bear at the modestly monickered 'Australian Zoo' you didn't sit down to a latte, spread out the Guardian and think "By Jove, Ms. Greer is spot on as usual! That Irwin fellow is a bit of a dunderhead. Now I shall rush out to purchase "The Boy" and rethink my retrograde views on paedophilia"? No? The Scum really know their audience and past polls have produced the truly stunning revelations; 77% think boat people should go to the back of the queue, 86% are against the legalisation of heroin in child-care centres and a staggering 93% say terrorists are bad people and should be made to eat their own intestines. Look forward to more no-brainers like "Was Steve Irwin a really Great Aussie?", "Is the ABC a communist propaganda machine run by a bunch of family-hating atheist homosexuals?" and "Do you like wasting money on pointless phone polls?"
