Zombies are a real Downer

September 22nd 2006 03:38
Thank you very much Mr Downer (Australian Foreign Minister) for pointing out the elaborate, anti-Israel hoax perpetrated by the world media to portray the honourable Israeli army as Red-Cross-bombing war criminals. At last somebody has the guts to acknowledge that the only place to get solid, unbiased, learned information is the Internet. It is good to see that our government no longer relies on the first-hand reports, media agencies like The Age or the BBC, or even advice from their own departments. Instead you are willing to embrace the completely reliable, egalitarian world forum that is fast replacing the archaic, inconvenient sources such as the media agencies, which only rely on their integrity and reputations. You have been brave enough to get your information unfiltered, unchecked and completely randomly from anonymous sites where respected and esteemed scientists like Mr Zombie analyse digital images and come up with their own opinions, then publish it as fact. I look forward to you publicising more research in this way such as the learned Dr Stefan Grossman's work on 911 (it was all holograms - www.gallerize.com), Brad and The Cosmic Penguin's overwhelming evidence that tells us that there is no way a passenger plane hit the pentagon (www.freedomfiles.org, www.cosmicpenguin.com) and of course Herman Otten's proof that the Holocaust never occurred (www.biblebelievers.org.au) I think you should have your own site so that we'd know that Saddam plotted 911, he had loads of WMD's, queue jumpers throw their kids overboard and you had no idea about those silly AWB warnings. If only more people would trust the Internet there would be no need to learn boring old history because we'd be rewriting it every day.

You seem to have a lot of faith in the news media.

I wont argue the internet is just as unreliable, but thats the point, its no less accurate on the whole.

More importantly when it comes to issues like this, there is certainly more chance of finding the truth on the WWW than on channel 10.

Granted you have to syphon through a lot of bullshit but at last somewhere undeneath it all a subjective truth lurks.

After all, the people who really know things and have there hands tied are, supressed from talking to the media are resorting to the internet more and more.

I have to say I disagree. No truly, I have to. It's my opinion piece after all. Although you could argue that most media is slanted and subjective, there is nowhere near as much factual inaccuracy as people make out. Occasional mistakes and hoaxes have been commited by (otherwise) reliable news agencies but they are usually corrected. Take the recent furore over a doctored image from associated press (read the Media watch story here) A simple exaggeration by a press photographer and it's big news. The internet on the other hand is abundant with error and soapbox versions of history. True, it is democratic and there is an awful lot of good info and alternative views that makes it a relatively free, unfiltered, uncensored source but the nature of that freedom means that is also open to any crackpot with an axe to grind. Many people I know believed that Japanese people make bonsai kittens, Chinese people eat babies and Microsoft will pay you money to spam people (all of which are false by the way) because of internet hoaxes. If you look at zombietime.com you will find a site from a guy who takes photo's of protests and makes fun of them. Hardly worthy of being cited by an elected government.

Fun thread backseat Sniper,

Not sure how coherent this will be, very sleepy.....

Obviously your smart enough enough to not blindly believe everything you see on TV and read on the net. I agree there is some truth in media and as you said there is some truth on the net.

Thing is with the media you are only getting one point of view. One rich corporations affiliates opinions. The media operates in a world of black and white, of absolutes.

The internet explores the grey area between right and wrong. Just like TV, too rely on just one site or just one persons opinion is not an objective way to seek the truth.

Your probably like me when you see or read something that interests you, you research it. Look for as much information as you can on a topic, get all points of view. Try to form an educated opinion.

The thing to remember is that just because somethings bullshit doesnt mean its always a complete lie. The news media reveals truth in there lies all the time and the net does the same.

Its like conspiracy theories in general, sure 95% are pure imagination, but there is usually a piece or two of the puzzle that fits well enough to raise very interesting questions. That undoubtedly deserve answers.

Obviously Im not trying to change your opinion, just offer an alternate point of view.

Tired, must go sleep.

I might not agree with everything you say, but I like the way you say it.

Thanks for your thoughts john doe, I agree educated opinion means just that, you have to educate yourself first. you also raise a good point about conspiracy theories and indeed some of them are true. the JFK conspiracy is probably the first and most famous modern conspiracy and it's a lot more cogent than the lone gunman theory. if you don't believe that there are groups of people conspiring to manipulate the people then you are naive at best. one thing that makes conspiracy theories so attractive is that they tie all the loose ends together and give a sense that someone is in control. even if it's an evil group it's still more comforting to believe than chaos or chance. religion, superstition and astrology all work in the same way.
as for bonsai kittens et al, it fulfills a need for people to believe in their own moral superiority and titillates the imagination. the Orient has long been the source for these types of stories because Westerners find it easy to believe that asians are exotic and therefore bizarre and savage. In the past, Thailand (or Siam), Africa and Australia was the realm of the wierd and wonderful things like canibalism, homosexuality, mysterious creatures (platypus, kangaroo), mutations (Siamese twins) and extreme tribal practices. Japan with its gameshows and rampant faddism is an easy target for manufactured hoaxes. My friends ain't that dumb, just gullible.
